Culturally responsive clinical and supervision practices in behavior analysis

Consideration of cultural practices and identities is essential to providing effective clinical care and supervisory practices. Culturally responsive practice is also a feature of providing socially significant care, a cornerstone of Applied Behavior Analysis. As such, it behooves us as professionals in the field of ABA to learn, research, and practice in culturally responsive ways. This presentation will offer information on the status of the literature on diversity, equity, and inclusion in behavior analysis, and provide strategies for providing culturally sensitive clinical services and supervisory practices.

Sarah Lechago
Dr. Sarah Lechago is an Associate Professor in the Behavior Analysis master’s program at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL). She directs the UHCL Verbal Behavior Clinic (VBC) and co-directs the UHCL Connecting the Dots (CTD) program. Her research interests include verbal behavior, student and caregiver training, motivating operations, and diversity, inclusion, and equity. Dr. Lechago serves as the founder and chair of the Texas Association for Behavior Analysis (TxABA) organization’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for Everyone (EDIE) committee. She has published in numerous journals including JEAB, JABA, and TAVB. Dr. Lechago is currently an Associate Editor for The Analysis of Verbal Behavior (TAVB) journal. She founded and heads a research lab called Behavior Analysts for Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (BADIE). She approaches instruction, research, and clinical supervision from a scientific and equity-minded perspective.
